A new trailer for the highly anticipated feature film, Babylon, has dropped! This trailer explores the depravity of Hollywood in the 1920s that was driven by personal ambition and unrestrained indulgence.
It’s clear that sound will be a significant factor in the film. It will clearly involve the transition from silent films to “talkies,” and will do so with powerful music scores.
With this film, Director Damien Chazelle is once again focusing on a similar theme that was clearly evident in his past works such as Whiplash and La La Land.
“They’re both about the struggle of being an artist and reconciling your dreams with the need to be human,” Chazelle said in a past interview with EW. It appears these protagonists in Babylon will fit within that archetype of the artist seeking his or her humanity.
This time around the trailer includes more of Tobey Maguire and from this writer’s perspective, he seems depraved in his own maniacal and unsettled manner, in comparison to the other characters.
Personally, I’m excited to see Li Jun Li’s portrayal of Lady Fay Zhu, a fictional character said to be based on the Asian American icon, actress Anna May Wong.
Catch Babylon in theaters on December 23, 2022.
