Don’t Worry Darling: A Stylish Thriller with Missed Potential

by Lethbridge College

Don’t Worry Darling is a psychological thriller produced in 2022. It follows the life of Alice living the American dream as a loving housewife to her husband, Jack. Later, she discovers a haunting mystery about her husband and her neighbors. When Alice finally did find out, it had a negative impact on her sanity.

Production

Don’t Worry Darling features good visual effects including wonderful cars and vividly colored attire. I think this attention to detail immediately got the audience’s interest. Although it was ideal, some of the visual effects were a little dull. One particular scene in the film was shown over ten times, and by the time it ended, it made no sense at all. This, I believe, also has an impact on how I see the entire film.

Cast

The film’s actors and actresses are amazing and did their best on screen. I applaud Florence Pugh for her great acting as the main character named Alice. I’ve seen some of her films, and I can see that she has a unique way of showing her emotions up to her intense reactions. She acts natural, and she handled the role perfectly. Her scenes are more interesting than the rest, and I think that her role as Alice will be one of her notable roles of all time. I also commend Harry Styles for acting as Alice’s husband, Jack. Harry was known for his music before engaging in movies. After appearing in several popular films, his acting career improved. Since they both look lovely together, I’m excited to watch more of their movies.  The main antagonist Frank, played by Chris Pine, is an interesting but uninspiring figure. I don’t think his role plays an important character and the story could be completed even if he appeared once or twice. Olivia Wilde deserves recognition for both her excellent directing the film and the role she played as Alice’s best friend, Bunny.

Storyline

Although it is a good thrilling story, there are a few flaws in the film. I started wondering why I was watching the movie in the first place because there was a lot of build-up story which made it more complicated. There were plenty of unanswered questions, and there were so many it almost bore me. What is the purpose of this? What happens to that? The twist and ending of the movie just added plot holes to the existing plot holes. According to David Stratton from the website of Rotten Tomatoes published on October 18, 2022 “The ending is certainly a let-down, and perhaps the screenplay should have had another rewrite”. The movie appears to me to be like a dream that someone had once while they were asleep: unclear, meaningless, and incomplete. It takes an observant eyes and deep understanding to completely understand the message of the film if it has one or re-watch it multiple times might help to fully understand the story behind it. But if it was me who wrote the storyline, I would remove all unnecessary scenes and expand more on the back story to further support the plot, leading all questions to be answered and the audience satisfied.

Overall, I would still commend all the actors and how Don’t Worry Darling was produced. Seeing the quality of the graphics, I had high expectations for the ending, but I didn’t get the message. I would rate the movie 2 out of 5 stars for having good visual effects, sound effects, and music, but I don’t recommend this movie as I felt like I wasted time watching it.
