The final trailer for ‘Logan’ has been released. The film is a sequel to The Wolverine (2013) and said to be Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as the furious three-clawed mutant. If the trailers are reliable indicators, we can be sure that this will be a superhero film unlike any other.
When we talk about final stories in superhero films, I think there’s one film in recent years we can think of. But Logan will be nothing like it. While the final installment of the Christopher Nolan Batman films, The Dark Knight Rises (2012), presented audiences with an older Bruce Wayne who has hung up the cape and cowl, once he reemerged as the Caped Crusader the film felt very much like the previous film, The Dark Knight (2008) – a villain threatens the city and challenges what Batman means to the people of Gotham.
Logan gives us Professor X and Wolverine in a post-apocalyptic world. There’s no mansion. There’s no gifted school. The world isn’t the same. And we flashback to the first X-Men film, we recall Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor X interacting with Wolverine with the intent of helping him discover his past and understand who he is. Now, it’s Wolverine who needs to help a young mutant come to terms with her place in the world.
That young mutant is Laura and played by Dafne Keen. She’s on the run and being hunted by the antagonists of the film, something Wolverine can very much relate to. It hasn’t been confirmed whether or not the clawed Laura is a clone of Hugh Jackman’s character.
Logan is directed by James Mangold, and comes out March 3, 2017.
