After the cancellation of pop culture landmark celebrations Anime Expo (AX) and San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) for this summer, anime distributor/dubbing specialist Funimation is hosting their own anime convention, FunimationCon 2020.
Their inaugural convention will be a two-day streaming event from Friday, July 3 through July 4 that will help fill the void left by these two major cancelations.
Attendees can expect industry panels, voice actor live-reads, voice actor Q&A’s, cosplay meetups, cosplay contests, and more to be announced.
This is happening. Our first convention, and it’s all virtual! We hope you can make it! https://t.co/HZYcugShod #funimationcon2020 pic.twitter.com/9MRpEIcoAL

In Funimation’s own words, the highlights of FunimationCon will be “No more long lines in the heat, no more overpriced hotel food, and best of all, you’re 100% in control of everything you smell.”
Long lines outside, I hate it.
Overpriced hotel food, BLEH! My source of nutrients is always random food trucks.
Smells. There’s a whole category of memes dedicated to the odor of congoers at events like AX and SDCC. It honestly doesn’t bother me, because I’ve never had too bad of an experience. Props to Funimation for being culturally relevant and shaming B.O.
Regardless, this is a virtual event I’m looking forward to, after completing my final two months of grad school classes and events over Zoom.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the cosplay-related events will be handled, as panels and voice actor events are much straightforward to put on.
What are you most looking forward to? What is something Funimation would have to do to truly get you excited?
