Disney+ has announced the cast of Gangnam B-Side, a Korean crime drama series coming later this year to the streaming service. The series will star Jo Woo-jin as elite officer and shunned Kang Dong-woo and Ji Chang-wook as back alley enforcer Yoon Gil-ho.
After years of being shunned by his department, detective Kang Dong-woo will be forced back to the frontlines.
The series is set deep in the shadows of big city lights in the city of Gangnam and follows the detective “as he’s pulled back into a world of vice, drugs and corruption following the disappearance of his daughter’s friend.”
With countless women missing, detective Kang is compelled to do whatever it takes to rescue these women which leads him to “uncover a truth that threatens to topple some of the city’s wealthiest elite.”
The series is written by Joo Won-gyu, and directed by Park Noo-ri. One interesting thing to note is that the writer infiltrated a club in Gangnam in 2016 in an attempt to regain contact with 20 runaway teenagers he had met as a pastor. Unfortunately, he was unable to persuade any of them to leave, with many of the male runaways becoming guards or hosts and many of the female runaways engaging in prostitution. I’m interested in seeing how Gangnam will be portrayed in this series, especially as the writer has a very informed perspective. I also wonder how much will be reminiscent of the Burning Sun scandal.
Gangnam B-Side is part of a slate of Korean content that will be available on Disney+, which include Uncle Samsik, Light Shop, Blood Free, Unmasked, The Tyrant, and The Zone: Survival Mission – Season 3. Ji Chang-wook was previously in the Korean drama The Worst of Evil as an undercover detective infiltrating a dangerous new gang.
The series will be exclusively streaming later this year on Disney+ (Hulu in the United States).
