Fox’s prequel to Gotham pre-Dark Knight era is getting a whole lot more interesting. Robin Lord Taylor (The Walking Dead) has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot, otherwise known as the Penguin. Meanwhile, Sean Pertwee (Elementary) has been cast as Alfred Pennyworth.
True to his origins, in this series Alfred is young Bruce Wayne’s loyal protector. I’m guessing Alfred will have his characterization derived from the Batman: Earth One graphic novel. In that story, he was hired by longtime friend Thomas Wayne as security because word was someone was trying to kill the Waynes because Thomas was running for mayor. Guess who current mayor was? The Penguin, I mean Mayor Cobblepot. Anyways, after Bruce’s parents are killed and he is taken back home. The police tell Alfred that he’s supposed to take care of Bruce now. And you know how the old British bastard responds? He’s pretty horrified at this, but goes to talk to Bruce. It goes something like “Well Bruce, I’m going to be taking care of you now…” And you know how the young prince of Gotham responds? He says, “who the hell are you?” And instead of explaining himself, Alfred spits out, “I’m your butler now.” Damn Alfred, basically went from second father to servant-for-life. Basically voluntarily as well.
[EDIT] : It was also reported that Gordon’s fiancée would be played by Erin Richards. Barbara Kean, in this interpretation, is an emergency room doctor (because cops and doctors in almost every drama end up together). In addition, Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice) was also cast as Captain Essen, Gordon’s boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad.
Now I do have my reservations about the show so far, I especially hope DC won’t baby the series and cop-out of the gruesome, but it seems like they’re on the right track. Plus, I was wrong about Brooklyn Nine-Nine so who knows.
