The Wrap reports that there are currently no plans from Warner Bros. or DC Films to attach any new filmmakers as Joss Whedon departs the Batgirl movie.
“It took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story.” -Joss Whedon.
While fans speculate Warner Bros. could be losing interest in bringing the character to theaters or recognizes a need to continue developing the core of the DC Extended Universe before diving deeper with spin-offs, sources say the Batgirl project was not planned for shooting until after Matt Reeves’ Batman film is completed. The Batman film is currently in development as Reeves is currently writing the story.
Whatever plans are for the Batgirl project, hopes are that a filmmaker with a track record for crafting stories featuring strong female characters in admirable ways is bought on to do the character and her legacy justice. Whedon is truly commendable for being forthcoming about lacking a story and giving this project the opportunity to be made as best as possible. Would you expect anything less from the man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
