Following the George Lopez reunion on the Lopez vs Lopez Christmas episode, the series took a break for the winter holidays and is set to return on January 6.
The last episode aired brought back familiar faces from the original George Lopez Show cast with Constance Marie, Belita Moreno, Valente Rodriguez, and Luis Garcia reuniting as extended family members of Mayan’s mother on the show (slash George’s ex-wife), Rosie.
As a refresher for their roles on George Lopez, Constance Marie played Angie the wife, Belita Moreno played Benny the mother of George, Valente played Ernie the best friend, and Luis played Max the son.
Prior to the midseason break, it was announced that the NBC television network ordered nine additional episodes of the series bringing the total for the first season up to 22 episodes. This is a well-deserved accomplishment for the show as it was the #1 NBC comedy launch on the streaming platform Peacock, has the strongest English-dominant Hispanic index among the four major broadcast networks, and the pilot episode is up to a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.6 million viewers on linear and digital viewing.
The next episode will feature guest stars Rita Moreno and Cheech Marin, both have also had single episode appearances on the George Lopez Show. Moreno will play the ghost of George’s grandma Dolores, a distinctly similar guest appearance to when she played George’s grandma on the George Lopez Show. Dolores is described to be “a feisty spirit on a mission to make her grandson George do right by her one way or another… whether it’s smacking him with her chancla or her razor-sharp tongue, she’s here to get things straight with George, whether he likes it or not.”
Marin will be playing Carlos, a traditional native healer or shaman known as a curandero. He has been invited to the Lopez home in order to help them with an uninvited spirit, read above. This is a strikingly different character than the one he previously played, George Lopez’s possible long-lost dad.
Fans can expect the next episode, Lopez vs. Ghosts, to be hilarious but heartwarming and insightful as hopefully generational trauma is healed and a reconciliation of religious beliefs is demonstrated on screen.
Lopez vs Lopez airs on NBC on Fridays at 8pm and will be available for streaming the next day on Peacock.
