The beloved webtoon, “Pain,” by Yoon Tae-ho is receiving a live action adaptation, titled Low Life, coming 2025 exclusively to Disney+ internationally and Hulu in the United States. Yang Se-jong (Doona!) plays the nephew Oh Hee-dong and Ryu Seung-ryong (Moving) plays Uncle Gwan-seok, two family members who will stop at nothing to find success as they seek to salvage treasure off the coast of Korea. The series will be written and directed by Kang Yun-sung who previously worked on Big Bet, the award-winning series starring Choi Min-sik as a serial entrepreneur who repeatedly crosses the line to help bolster his burgeoning casino business.
Synopsis: In 1970s Korea, a fisherman discovers a treasure lost for generations at the bottom of the ocean. Taking a small part of it home for himself, word soon begins to spread about the vast fortune waiting to be claimed by those brave enough to risk the depths. Desperate to escape his depressing life, Oh Hee-dong partners with his uncle Oh Gwan-seok in an attempt to reach the treasure before the rest of the world. But with both family members lacking loyalty and integrity, the tension boils to a tipping point.
Low Life is the latest Korean drama announced as a part of Disney’s growing collection of Korean storytelling available on Disney+ internationally and on Hulu in the United States. Other series include the previously mentioned Big Bet and Moving, as well as A Shop For Killers, which I highly recommend if an interest in criminal elements is your cup of tea, which Low Life will surely touch upon as the opportunity to make a fortune will attract all sorts of unsavory folk.
Stay tuned for more updates on this series such as trailers and date announcements.
