The whole series is based in and around Los Angeles. As the name suggests, this television series shows the Human-like life of the fallen angel, Lucifer. Tom Ellis plays Lucifer Morningstar, the devil. He decides to retire from Hell and move to Los Angeles, the city of Angels, where he owns and operates a nightclub called the Lux. He is accompanied by Mazikeen, one of his demons from hell, who works in Lux in a human form named Maze. Lucifer hosts extravagant parties at Lux. One such night, one of Lucifer’s lovers is shot dead outside Lux while talking with him, which makes him curious to find who did this to her. Upon the arrival of LAPA detective Chloe Decker, Lucifer decides to accompany Chloe and her team on finding the culprit. The detective refuses to include Lucifer at first, but while interrogating one of the suspects, Lucifer uses his special charm to sort of hypnotize the suspect and discover their greatest desire.
As the case gets solved with the help of Lucifer, Chole finds his interest in investigating crimes and decides to appoint him as a consultant to the LAPD.
Main Characters
Chloe Jane Decker: Started her career as an actress in Los Angeles but decided to become a detective following the death of her dad, a former detective for the LAPD, John Decker. She is a very humble, yet a very intellectual and bold detective.
Amenadiel: Being the eldest of all angels of God, Amenadiel initially in the first season of the series tries very hard to send Lucifer back to hell since he insists that angels should never co-exist with humans and the celestial energy if witnessed by humanity, can have dire consequences. As the show progresses, Amenadiel starts to like life with humans, and eventually becomes one of Lucifers’ supporters.
Daniel “Dan” Espinoza: Chloe’s ex-husband is also a detective in the LAPD, Dan lost all his reputation in the precinct as he was involved in a case where he became corrupt. This case leads to him and Chloe separating. Dan disliked Lucifer at the start of the series because of him calling Dan, “Detective Douche”, and he is also not comfortable with how lucifer interacts with his ex-wife Chloe. As the show prolongs, he sort of gets along with Lucifer, but in season 4 he despises Lucifer because he thinks Lucifer is the reason for the death of his love Charlotte Richards.
Ella Lopez: This forensic tech is also mesmerized by Lucifer and she is the one who makes Lucifer feel loved by her cuteness and friendship. While being very cheerful, Ella has a dark past which she tries to not come across again.
Linda Martin: Linda is a therapist based in Los Angeles, and Lucifer seeks counsel from her even though he ruled Hell for millions of years. As their relationship develops, he becomes a very close friend of Linda. This makes him reveal his true self as the devil, making Linda the first human to experience celestial life.
This show explores the fusion of real and celestial co-existing in many different aspects. Mainly being Love, trust, friendship. Lucifer who always was portrayed as the ‘evil’, here shows us an alternative perspective on how really, he was destined to be ruling hell, and that he is not evil, but he loves punishing evil. Throughout the show, it proves how humans can be more despicable than actual demons through various crimes and deeds. Lucifer really emphasizes that before you die, if you feel guilty, you deserve hell. And some episodes show hell is different from the stigma that it’s burning you alive, instead it shows how each person must suffer repeatedly the sequence of their guilt for eons of time.
Rating
The series is really put well together with the casting and the overall ambiance it creates, but at times one may feel like they are just watching an investigation thriller. Lucifer really blends the pursuit of justice on earth with his powers seamlessly throughout the series.
