The trailer for the upcoming series Marvel Studios’ Echo is out now and begins by focusing on Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and his presence in a young Maya Lopez’s life, who first appeared in Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye. For those who remember, at the end of season 1, Lopez confronts Kingpin during his escape but a gunshot is heard.
The trailer reveals the consequences of that encounter as now Kingpin wears an eyepatch, an homage to a storyline from the comics when Lopez blinded both of his eyes. Similar to other Marvel series such as Hawkeye and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the trailer for Echo suggests that the series will be a promise of continued action featuring fisticuffs and slamming through walls.
Additionally, the sound design will play off of Lopez’s deafness with the trailer alternating between a high frequency pitch that tunes out parts of certain scenes while also switching to narration provided by the Kingpin. The narration includes a memorable line that asks “so who is the monster” after highlighting similarities between him and Lopez.
The series is the first to be included under the “Marvel Spotlight” banner. Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum said of the decision to launch the new banner with the series, “Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Additionally, the banner indicates to audiences that no other MCU projects need to be watched prior in order to understand these Spotlight series.
As an early reminder, remember to set your Disney+ profile to TV-MA in order to stream Echo once the series is out. All five episodes will be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu starting January 10, 2024.
