With the release of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Guy Ritchie, Dorkaholics was invited to speak with Henry Golding about the film and of course his inner dork.
It was amazing to hear about his childhood filled with playing games such as Magic: The Gathering, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Quake 3, and Starcraft.
The conversation touches on his experience filming and how it reminded him of his childhood gaming experiences.
Neil Bui: What made you a dork growing up?
Henry Golding: I was really into Magic: the Gathering. I played [games] like CS:GO and the original Counter-Strike in dungeons in the UK. Quake 3 was a game I used to play, Starcraft, Command and Conquer, Red Alert, Pokémon. Nowadays I have a lot less time for fun games like that, but I reminisce and once in a while they’ll come out with crack, like when Diablo came out, I was super hyped about the latest one. But I think being obsessive over some really cool stuff makes me somewhat of a geek.
Neil Bui: I would like to call you a dork.
Henry Golding: A dork! Sorry!
Neil Bui: You bring up CS:GO and other shoot games with military style tones, and it’s very reminiscent of things that I thought of when I was watching you in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Henry Golding: I mean that’s really what my childhood consisted of. I used to go with my brother to these internet cafes and play LAN games with Quake 2 and Quake 3. So for me it was such a great release and it kind of made me the person that I am today, like strangely.
Neil Bui: I can only imagine the joy your inner child felt when you got to show up to set and be told ‘hey you’re going to be behind this machine gun.’
Henry Golding: To be honest, the inner dork of me loved the fact that I was able to work with Guy Ritchie for the second time. I grew up literally geeking out to Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Every other sort of week it would be on at my friend’s house or I’d have it on as the late night movie or something like that. So to be able to work with him in that capacity in two movies that are absolutely fantastic, I’m kind of happy with my career right now.
