The Academy Award nominated documentary short film, Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó, has been announced to be making its debut on Disney+ on February 9, 2024. The film is by first generation Taiwanese-American director Sean Wang and is described as a personal love letter from him to his grandmothers.
For those curious about award and nominations, those audiences are in for a real treat, as the film has made its mark with many accolades including the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at SXSW, the Grand Jury Awards at AFI Fest and SIFF 2023, the Audience Award at The Wrap 2023 Shortlist Film Festival, and Special Jury Recognition at LAAPFF 2023.
Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó is the first installment of the “People & Places” relaunch on Disney+, which was previously Walt Disney’s Academy Award-winning documentary short film series from the 1950s and 1960s. This relaunch will be a collection of short documentary films featuring a mix of up-and-coming and established filmmakers telling real-life stories of extraordinary people and places from around the globe embodying the traits of Disney that we have come to know and recognize throughout our lives.
Catch this heartwarming documentary short Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó on Disney+ starting Friday, February 9, 2024.
Wang is also premiering his feature film DìDi at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival this week, where the film has already received the Audience Award for US Dramatic film. Dorkaholics is slated to cover the red carpet for DìDi, so hopefully there is an opportunity to meet with Wang.
