The Snyder Cut of the Justice League is dropping in 2021 on HBO MAX and will be divided into four one-hour chapters. In addition, there may be a possibility for a theatrical release too.
Director’s Cuts are the fully realized vision of a project solely from a director’s perspective, without the interference of studio notes or outside pressures. Some films that have been famously different than their original edit include Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven, and, conveniently, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
But Zack Snyder’s Justice League is radically different from the one released under Joss Whedon’s direction, most famously, Darkseid Is and Silas Stone’s death, both of which were cut from the theatrical film. What kind of impact will the Snyder Cut have on creative control, and passion projects?
Recently, there’s been a demand for an Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, though the likelihood of that happening is slim.
If the Snyder Cut proves to be a rousing success, long lost, and even suppressed cuts may see the light of day. Since The Rise of Skywalker release, which wasn’t the wild success and critical reception some had hoped, there was a call from fans to see a JJ Abrams cut.
The idea of a radically different cut of an already released film set in a shared universe has been something I’ve always pondered. Would there be any long-term continuity impact? Or would it remove the previous version and be the official canon, or just an else world take of the universe fans are invested in, but ultimately mean nothing in the grand scheme?
Because Zack Snyder’s Justice League was Part I of two JL Movies he intended to create before his removal from WB, would it really mean anything if it isn’t canon to the DCEU? Would it be an else world take and allow Snyder to fulfill his vision he had and just set it out of the DCEU-verse since they’ve established that every DC Media exists as of CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths Multiverse setting?
If The Snyder Cut does well, it’s guaranteed to make bank because of the enormity of the fanbase and little care about what critics think, could it lead to it being on another DC Earth and have Zack Snyder’s Justice League Part II be developed with Snyder having complete control to finish his story?
2021 can’t get here soon enough for us to find out.
