Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the latest game in a long running series developed by Nintendo. The game currently features over 80 playable characters from a huge array of different games including Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Minecraft and many more. The game is fast, colorful and can literally be played an unlimited number of times. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a must-play game for fans of fighting games and video games in general.
The gameplay of Ultimate is easy to learn but hard to master. The gameplay is extremely fast paced and requires a high level of skill to outsmart and outmaneuver your opponents. The controls are simple and easy to learn within a matter of minutes but it can take hours to just understand the comprehensive gameplay. The replay ability is limitless leaving players with hours of endless entertainment. Sam Moline, a newer player to Smash Bros. Ultimate, explained her experience in one simple sentence.
“Smash Bros is chaotic and fun and I’m not very good at it.”
One thing that Smash offers players in the fighting game genre is the recognizable and lovable characters that almost everyone has come to know. Now, with over 80 different characters to choose from, anyone can find a character that matches their play style. Every character has unique move sets and abilities allowing for hours of just testing all the potential combos you can discover.
The graphics in Ultimate are colorful and vibrant with an amazing art style that ties in tons of different franchises together. There are visual glitches and some may call the game’s graphics overly simplified but others think it adds to the charm of the game.
The sound design in Ultimate is nearly perfect, in my opinion it has the most satisfying sounds of any fighting game. When you nail that perfect hit and KO your enemy the satisfaction you get from the sound alone is exhilarating. The sound effects in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are expertly designed to provide immediate feedback to the player, and the sound of a successful hit is particularly satisfying. Hearing the distinct “ding” sound that accompanies a perfectly timed hit is incredibly rewarding, and it adds to the overall excitement and intensity of the game. It’s a small detail, but one that can make all the difference in creating a truly immersive and enjoyable gaming experience.
According to a review by Tom Marks published by IGN on December 6th, 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate scored a 9.4/10 and is easily one of the highest rated fighting games ever. The reasons listed above are just a few of the reasons why the game scored so high on so many different reviews.
A Smash Bros. veteran of nearly two decades, Mitch Young described his experience with the latest iteration of the game as being overwhelmingly positive. However, he did mention one glaring problem that typically is overlooked.
“The online play is extremely laggy,” Young explained. “Half the time you lose just because of the bad connection.”
In an article written by Ben Gilbert on December 16th, 2018, published by business insider “Nintendo has said nothing publicly about the online issues with “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” and a representative for Nintendo didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment. It is now 2023 and Nintendo still has not addressed the glaring issue.
Overall, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an excellent fighting game that offers unlimited amounts of content for players to experience. The game is easy to pick up and play but has enough complexity to keep advanced players engaged. Whether you’re a fan of fighting games or any of the video game franchises represented in the game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a must-play game that is sure to provide hours of fun and excitement.
