Superman (2025): Trailer Delivers Hope for Humanity

by Neil Bui

At the start of the week leading up to the global premiere of the teaser trailer of DC Studios’ Superman, the team at Warner Bros. Pictures invited press (such as Dorkaholics) to see a private premiere of the trailer and have conversations with writer, director, and producer James Gunn and the cast of the film (Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, and of course David Corenswet).

“Our approach to Superman in this film starts with vulnerability, showcased right from the opening scene where he is rescued by Krypto,” Gunn said. “This movie explores Superman’s human side, his struggles, and his grounded existence in a fantastical world filled with other superheroes and extraordinary elements, all while maintaining a strong emotional core.”

Erik Davis of Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes moderated the discussion and kicked it off by asking Gunn how he devised a story that honors the legacy of Superman while appealing to a new generation.

“The genesis of this Superman movie wasn’t about just honoring the past. Initially, I focused on telling a story that excited and moved me,” Gunn said. “The narrative evolved naturally, embodying the essence of Superman as the ultimate good guy, emphasizing kindness not only in the storyline but also among the cast and crew during production.”

Corenswet shared a glimpse into his childhood as a boy who saw the good in people, which is something he wanted to bring to his portrayal of Superman.

“Stepping into Superman’s shoes, I wanted to bring an authentic touch to the role, reflecting my personal disconnect from petty conflicts and gossip, which aligns with how I perceive Superman’s character—focused on the good and hopeful.” Corenswet explained.

Davis then followed up by asking how the secret identity of Clark Kent plays into this new story.

“Clark is at the beginning of his journalism career at the Daily Planet, not quite a star like Lois Lane but eager to establish his credibility,” Corenswet stated. “His secret identity adds a layer of tension as he navigates who to trust.”

Gunn echoed Corenswet’s sentiments by stating that the film is a reflection of humanity’s ability to be kind and decent.

“Ultimately, this film is about reflecting the inherent kindness and decency we believe exists in everyone. It’s a story of Superman, but it’s also a story about us, about humanity,” Gunn said.

As the character Lois Lane has evolved over the years, Davis asked Brosnahan about the unique qualities of her portrayal.

“This iteration of Lois Lane adapts her relentless quest for truth to the modern era where print journalism is seen by some as a dying field,” Brosnahan explained. “She embodies the tenacity and courage that have always defined her character.”

Hoult was then asked about his take on Lex Luthor in this iteration of the DC Universe.

“This Lex is crafted to fit James Gunn’s unique, emotionally charged universe,” Hoult answered. “He’s intelligent and ruthless, but there’s an undercurrent of ideology that might make audiences understand—even if they don’t agree—his perspective.”

And of course, with the two of them on stage, the relationship between Superman and Lois Lane had to be asked.

“Their relationship is deep and complex, united by their pursuit of truth and justice, yet challenged by their different approaches to life,” Brosnahan explained. “This dynamic adds a rich layer to their interactions throughout the film.”

Following the discussion, the festivities moved towards the lobby as Gunn and the cast were available to speak with attendees.

With respect to Hoult’s cautioned approach to avoiding spoilers, I asked him to describe the motivation behind Lex’s feelings toward Superman in one word.

He said, “Jealousy.”

In conversation with Brosnahan, I had to ask her about her experience inside of the Daily Planet, which she described as a “pinch me moment” with “buzz” and “energy” everytime she was “looking up at the Daily Planet sign.”

Catch Superman in theaters on July 11, 2025.
