Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Attack of the Doc!, The Sympathizer, Never Have I Ever, and Stephen Curry: Underrated.
- World Premiere of Attack of the Doc!
The world premiere of Attack of the Doc! will be this Friday (April 21st) at the Friday Cinema in Santa Ana, CA. The documentary addresses the unanswered questions from the cancellation of G4TV and Attack of the Show!, 21 years after the channel originally launched.
G4TV’s Attack of the Show! was ahead of its time as a television milestone for nerd culture, which launched the early career of hosts Olivia Munn and Kevin Pereira.
Attack of the Doc! will be available across all TVOD/Digital platforms and Video On Demand in North America beginning April 24th, 2023, the exact 21st Anniversary of G4TV’s launch.
- Trailer for The Sympathizer
The Sympathizer, the upcoming HBO Original Limited Series based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Vietnamese-American professor Viet Thanh Nguyen, is coming to Max in 2024, but until then the first teaser trailer has been released.
For the unfamiliar, the series “is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States.”
I’m excited to see where the cultural conversation will be once the series debuts. Very often the Vietnam War is boiled down to communism is evil and the United States are the heroes, but real life is much more complicated and hopefully this adaptation will shed light on the political complexities and allow for more nuanced conversations or at least challenge viewers to reflect on their previous assumptions.
It’s interesting to see Robert Downey Jr. playing multiple characters in this series, but I can’t help but think that it’s tied to the line that the main character says about Vietnamese people, “Guess we all look the same after all, right?” Is this an example of holding a mirror up against ignorance and those subtle everyday forms of racism, the stereotypes and the assumptions? What if all white people look the same?
- Final Season Premiere Date Announced for Never Have I Ever
The fourth and final season of Never Have I Ever premieres on June 8, 2023 on Netflix.
- Release Date for Stephen Curry: Underrated
Apple Original Films and A24 has announced that their documentary Stephen Curry: Underrated will be released in select theaters and premiere globally on Apple TV+ on July 21, 2023.
