Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Civil War, Tales of the Empire, Janet Planet, and MaXXXine.
- Civil War: Final Trailer
With the release of Civil War set for this Friday, A24 has released a final trailer for the film which weaves the dialogue of the film together with quotes from critics set to bombastic audio to craft a 60-second hype reel encouraging audiences to see the film.
Release Date: In theaters April 12, 2024
Synopsis: A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.
- Tales of the Empire: Official Trailer
Star Wars: Tales is an American animated anthology television series created by Dave Filoni for the streaming service Disney+.
The second installment will be Tales of The Empire, focusing on stories from the Galactic Empire from the original film trilogy.
Release Date: On Disney+ on May 4, 2024
Synopsis: A vengeful young woman and a former Jedi navigate the ruthless Galactic Empire during different eras, their divergent choices shaping their fates in a rapidly changing galaxy.
- Janet Planet: Official Trailer
Among all the glitz and glam of Hollywood blockbusters, the intimate storytelling of Janet Planet feels like a change of pace for moviegoers in playwright Annie Baker’s filmmaking debut.
Release Date: In select theaters on June 21, 2024 and nationwide June 28, 2024
Synopsis: In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut.
- MaXXXine: Official Trailer
MaXXXine feels like a meta plotline as a horror film about an actress trying to break into film. I’m curious what Maxine Minx’s past is and what her tie will be to the killer. At first the trailer had me thinking that she might be the killer, but that might not be as interesting.
Release Date: In theaters July 5, 2024
Synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.
