Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Dead Boy Detectives, Boy Kills World, Heeramandi, and The Garfield Movie.
- Dead Boy Detectives: Official Trailer
Dead Boy Detectives is a new series in The Sandman Universe for Netflix and feels distinct yet familiar like a CW primetime series, which isn’t a bad thing. If the trailer is indicative of anything, then I’m hoping the inclusion of “Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance means that there will be a nostalgic and appropriately dark soundtrack for fans to enjoy as they follow the adventures of Edwin and Charles the titular ghosty detectives.
Release Date: On Netflix on April 25, 2024
Synopsis: Meet Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), “the brains” and “the brawn” behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency. Teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts… who solve mysteries. They will do anything to stick together – including escaping evil witches, Hell and Death herself. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.
- Boy Kills World: Official Trailer
Bill Skarsgård plays a deaf and mute assassin, expressing his thoughts with an inner voice from a childhood video game, and being absolutely shredded. Andrew Koji is also in the film, with scenes in the trailer showing that he’s witness to Skarsgård’s character’s incredible feats. The film feels like the fusion of the brutal action of the John Wick series with the outlandishness of The Suicide Squad.
Release Date: In theaters on April 26, 2024
Synopsis: Skarsgård stars as “Boy” who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting. As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.
- Heeramandi: Premiere Date Revealed
With a drone show in Mumbai, Netflix revealed the launch date for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series debut of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar to be May 1, 2024.
Release Date: On Netflix on May 1, 2024
Synopsis: Arch nemeses Mallikajaan and Fareedan are locked in a battle for succession of Heeramandi, where courtesans reign as queens. The only hope is young Alam, Mallikajaan’s youngest daughter. But what happens when Alam relinquishes power and chooses the love of one man over the adulation of many? Set in pre-independent India against the backdrop of the freedom movement, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is an epic saga of love, power, betrayal, struggle and, ultimately, freedom.
