Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Expats, Love Lies Bleeding, Rebel Moon, and Bridgerton.
- Expats: Official Trailer
It’s strange seeing Nicole Kidman in a trailer for series after regularly seeing her before movies at AMC Theaters, but getting to hear her say new lines this time with her iconic voice and delivery is a refreshing pleasure. Expats is based on the best-selling novel by Janice Y. K. Lee, The Expatriates, and takes audiences to modern Hong Kong into the lives of three American women. I’m looking forward to watching the series and learning more about the tragedy their characters faced as well as the series’ exploration of privilege, victimhood, and culpability.
Release Date: Premiering on Prime Video with two episodes on January 26, 2024, with new episodes launching weekly until the finale on February 23, 2024
Synopsis: Set against the complex tapestry of Hong Kong residents, Expats depicts a multifaceted group of women after a single encounter sets off a chain of life-altering events that leaves everyone navigating the intricate balance between blame and accountability.
- Love Lies Bleeding: Official Trailer
Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian star in the upcoming romantic thriller, Love Lies Bleeding, set to premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. From the trailer, I felt this foreboding criminal element similar to Drive colliding with the world of competitive bodybuilding to bring this love story between a gym employee from a criminal family with a bisexual bodybuilder.
Release Date: In theaters on March 8, 2024
Synopsis: From Director Rose Glass comes an electric new love story; reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.
- Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver: Official Trailer
The sequel to the latest film by Zack Snyder, the space epic Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, is out now. Having been filmed back to back, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is a natural progression of the last film and looks to continue the visual spectacles that Snyder is known for, but hopefully will improve upon the storytelling elements that have not been positively received.
Release Date: On Netflix on April 19, 2024
Synopsis: REBEL MOON – PART TWO: THE SCARGIVER continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. On the eve of their battle the warriors must face the truths of their own pasts, each revealing why they fight. As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made.
- Bridgerton: Season 3: Teaser Art and New Images
Netflix has released teaser art and additional new images from Bridgerton Season 3 to celebrate the anniversary of the series’ release.
Release Date: On Netflix on May 16, 2024 for Part 1 (Episodes 301-304) and June 13, 2024 for Part 2 (Episodes 305-308)
Synopsis: From Shondaland and new showrunner, Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly. Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly. Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise (Claudia Jessie), who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope’s growing presence in the town makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret.
