Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on The Tiger’s Apprentice, Players, Expats, and 3 Body Problem.
- Expats: Official Key Art
The new key art for the upcoming limited series, Expats, really captures the feeling of crossed paths between the characters played by Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji-Young Yoo.
Release Date: Premiering on Prime Video with two episodes on January 26, 2024 with new episodes each week until the finale on February 23, 2024
Synopsis: Set against the vibrant and tumultuous tapestry of 2014 Hong Kong, Expats centers on three American women—Margaret (Nicole Kidman), Hilary (Sarayu Blue), and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo)—whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy. The series interrogates privilege and explores what happens when the line between victimhood and culpability becomes blurred. Brian Tee plays Margaret’s husband Clarke and Jack Huston plays Hilary’s husband David.
- The Tiger’s Apprentice: Official Trailer
The trailer for the upcoming animated film, The Tiger’s Apprentice, is now available and provides a glimpse into this Crazy Rich Asians reunion between Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh, as this time “son” takes on “mother” as he guides the latest guardian in a family lineage.
Release Date: On Paramount+ on February 2, 2024
Synopsis: Based on the popular children’s book series of the same name by Laurence Yep, THE TIGER’S APPRENTICE follows Chinese-American teenager Tom Lee (Soo Hoo), whose life changes forever when he discovers he is part of a long lineage of magical protectors known as the Guardians. With guidance from a mythical tiger named Hu (Golding), Tom trains to take on Loo (Yeoh), a force that is as powerful as a Guardian but with evil intentions to use magic to destroy humanity. To have a fighting chance against Loo, Tom must reunite all twelve Zodiac animal warriors and master his own newly discovered powers.
- Players: Trailer Debut
It’s a pretty simple setup with a group of single friends that are also a crew of players, running their playbook of pickup tactics together. Girl meets boy. Girl wants to be with the boy. Girl’s best friend is concerned about this girl losing herself or being with the wrong person. My gut tells me that the best friend has either liked this girl or will come to realize he does. But this feels like a film that will make the journey of finding out a fun and worthwhile one.
“It was never about the plays, it was about being with the people that get you.”
Release Date: On Netflix on February 14, 2024
Synopsis: New York sportswriter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with best friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.) and their crew. While it has led to countless one-night stands over the years, following their playbook comes with a strict set of ground rules — chief among them: you can’t build a relationship from a play. When Mack unexpectedly falls for her latest target, charming war correspondent Nick (Tom Ellis), she begins to rethink the game entirely. As the lines between work, fun, friendship, and romance begin to blur, Mack must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps.
- 3 Body Problem: Official Trailer
“Prepare yourself for something very strange.” 3 Body Problem is an adaptation of a hit novel of the same name. Judging from the trailer, this sci-fi detective thriller does not only include reality warping elements with rippling effects across time, but the inclusion of historic China and futuristic imagery suggests this genre-bender will be visually captivating as viewers go along the ride to uncover this mystery.
Release Date: On Netflix on March 21, 2024
Synopsis: A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
