Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Monkey Man, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
- Monkey Man: Producer Jordan Peele Featurette
Producer Jordan Peele shares his admiration for the work that Dev Patel puts into their upcoming film Monkey Man. With themes of revenge and representing/fighting for a cause, comparisons to John Wick and Batman can’t be avoided, but don’t do the film justice as its cultural significance sets it apart.
Release Date: In theaters April 5, 2024
Synopsis: Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
- Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver
The next part of Rebel Moon feels even more like a darkened Star Wars film, but of course that was the intention by filmmaker Zack Snyder. Doesn’t Scargiver sound like Starkiller?
Release Date: On Netflix April 19, 2024
Synopsis: Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. On the eve of their battle, the warriors must face the truths of their own pasts, each revealing why they fight. As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made.
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga: Trailer 2
The second trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga makes the cold, desolateness of the desert world of Mad Max feel somewhat colorful and vibrant, despite the ongoing dystopian environment. Anya Taylor-Joy brings a ferociousness touched upon in The Queen’s Gambit, Split, and The Menu and heightens it through the opportunities an action film like this provides. With the return of Chris Hemsworth’s beard, it’s hard to shake off the thoughts of Dark Thor being the villain of this film, but it’s a fun idea to have. #Multiverse
Release Date: In theaters May 24, 2024
Synopsis: As the world collapses, young Furiosa was snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and fell into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
- Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Teaser Trailer
Who would have thought that another Beetlejuice would be made? Did Tim Burton even think of this after the first film?
Release Date: In theaters September 6, 2024
Synopsis: Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.
