Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, TV, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on On Call, Sakamoto Days, Harley Quinn, and The Brutalist.
- On Call – Official Trailer
Release Date: All 8 episodes on Prime Video on January 9, 2025
Synopsis: On Call is an adrenalized and visceral police drama that follows a rookie and veteran officer duo as they go on patrol in Long Beach, California. Shot with a mixture of hand-held cameras, bodycam and dash-cam footage to create a cinema verité effect, the innovative series explores the morality of protecting and serving a community.
- Sakamoto Days – Official Trailer
With a storyline reminiscent of The Way of the Househusband, the series about the yakuza member Immortal Dragon giving up a life of crime to become a stay-at-home husband, Sakamoto Days is about a legendary assassin becoming a convenience store owner. It really makes me wonder if Netflix’s anime ventures are leading to any reduction in crime. Is post-crime-cozy-living the new isekai?
Release Date: On Netflix on January 11, 2025
Synopsis: Taro Sakamoto used to be an unrivaled hitman, earning legendary status in the underworld. But one day, the unthinkable happened. Sakamoto fell in love. He started dating, retired, got married, and had a kid, growing overweight as a result. Though now working as a humble convenience store owner, the world of hitmen still follows him. Sakamoto, along with Shin, a young man with telepathy and an employee at his small store, will protect his humble life and family, or die trying.
- Harley Quinn: Season 5 – Official Trailer
The upcoming season of Harley Quinn takes the wacky adventures of Harley and Poison Ivy to Metropolis where they’re sure to wreak just as much havoc as chaos inevitably ensues around them. But familiar faces are sure to continue making an appearance: Bane, Superman, Bruce Wayne, Joker, and pinch me… it’s Red X!
Release Date: Premieres on Max on January 16, 2025
Synopsis: The fifth season of Harley Quinn finds Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Ivy (Lake Bell) in a new location: Metropolis!—the home of all things Superman, Lois Lane, and the Daily Planet. Harley and Ivy discover that something sinister is at play and all is not what it seems. Looming threats include Lex Luthor and his sister, Lena Luthor, plus fan-favorite Brainiac. But of course, Harley’s crew of misfits and allies will join her on this irreverent journey that takes no prisoners in having fun in the DC sandbox.
- The Brutalist – Official Trailer
This film looks like it will be a heart-wrenching glimpse into America’s past in a tale that is sure to remind audiences of the immigrant journey and hopefully impart us all with more empathy, compassion, and human decency.
