Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the attention is on Superman: Legacy, BEEF, American Born Chinese, and Joy Ride.
- James Gunn Will Be Directing Superman: Legacy
DC Studios’ Co-Chairmen/CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced that Gunn will be directing the highly anticipated Superman: Legacy, with Safran producing. This comes a few months after the announcement about the start of the multi-platform connected DC Universe, which revealed that Gunn would be writing the screenplay for Superman: Legacy. The film has been described as telling the story of Superman’s journey to reconciling his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.
Nostalgists will be pleased to hear that this iteration of Superman will be the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way which seems to undo the New Mission Statement for the Man of Tomorrow that was announced in 2021 – Truth, Justice and A Better Tomorrow.
However, Gunn’s Superman will still be guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. I see this as an appropriate and important characteristic for a Superman in today’s modern world, as it can feel like vulnerability is seen as weakness in today’s society and people are afraid to be kind for risk of being taken advantage of.
Superman: Legacy arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.
- Netflix Releases Trailer, Art, and Photos for BEEF
Netflix has released the official main trailer, key art, additional photos, and a first look clip for its upcoming 10-episode dark comedy series, BEEF, premiering April 6, 2023.
- New Poster for American Born Chinese
At SXSW, American Born Chinese revealed an exclusive poster created by multidisciplinary visual artist James Jean at the Disney+ Original series’ world premiere. All 8 episodes will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on May 24, 2023.
- Trailer and Poster Released for Joy Ride
Contrary to early assumptions from our initial coverage of Joy Ride, the official (red band) trailer for the film reveals it to be much more comedic and in the absurd realm that the film’s producer Seth Rogen is known for. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t deliver on a heartwarming story about identity and self-discovery. Joy Ride is slated for release July 7, 2023.
